Massachusetts ZIP Codes in Postal Groups
Massachusetts has ZIP assignments for city centers, towns, villages, islands, and unique institutional or post-office uses. The USPS L012 combination list groups these codes by mail-processing destination; its post-office label is not a boundary and does not mean that every code in a group has the same local coverage. The inspected list records Massachusetts identifiers and place descriptions by processing group. Some groups cross state processing schemes, while others collect several towns under one label. Use the full address in the official lookup to confirm the live assignment.

This Massachusetts ZIP table is a mail-processing reference, not a complete residential boundary layer or a population count. The inspected USPS L012 combination list groups Massachusetts ZIPs by destination. Ranges are inclusive; active assignments can change, and an address-level lookup is the final check. Unique and PO-box codes in Boston, Cambridge, and Amherst should not be read as ordinary residential neighborhoods. When a postal label and a town record differ, keep both fields and let the relevant record custodian define the municipality.
Massachusetts ZIP Codes Follow Mail Routes
The post-office label in the Massachusetts list names the destination used for mail processing, not the legal town for every address in a group. Some lines combine neighboring municipalities or villages; others include a unique, institutional, or PO-box assignment. Ranges in the table are inclusive, but the list is not a parcel map, a boundary file, or a count of residents. Read the ZIP code directory as a route guide, then use the address and town to find the correct local record keeper.
Postal names in Massachusetts often reflect a village or neighborhood. The label “Dorchester,” for example, refers to a Boston area, while Brookline is a separate municipality beside Boston. A parcel's assessor town and its USPS city can therefore be different and still describe the same address. A ZIP scheme group can also include codes from several towns; that grouping says where mail is sorted, not who lives together.
Verify a Massachusetts ZIP by Address
For an active mail destination, check the full street address in the official USPS lookup. A city and state search can help find a code, but an address-level result is the stronger check when nearby towns share postal names. Do this before using an assessor or voter record, because the ZIP entered on a record can be a mailing field, a residential field, or a parcel attribute. USPS assigns delivery geography; Massachusetts municipalities maintain the local boundaries and tax records.
The official USPS ZIP Code Lookup is the final address check. The inspected L012 list is scheduled to take effect on October 1, 2026; as of September 24, 2026, that scheme is still forthcoming. Use the live address lookup to check the current assignment rather than relying on a cached group label.
Boston and Cambridge Unique ZIPs
Boston's list includes codes for downtown and government mail as well as central neighborhoods. ZIPs 02201, 02203, and 02222 appear among Boston's unique or PO-box assignments; they should not be read as ordinary residential areas. Cambridge's 02163 is tied to institutional use, and Amherst 01003 and 01004 also appear in unique or institutional groupings. A campus or post-office code can identify a mail destination without defining a neighborhood or the home address of a particular person.
When a Massachusetts ZIP code is unique or serves boxes, keep it separate from the municipality in a resident record. The person's town belongs in the local field used by the assessor, clerk, or election office. If a record has only an institutional ZIP, it may be a mailing link rather than a place of residence. Check the underlying address with USPS and ask the local custodian which town holds the record.
Western Massachusetts ZIP Processing Groups
Some western Massachusetts codes are grouped under out-of-state processing labels. The inspected list shows a group labeled Botsford, Connecticut, and a separate Massachusetts ZIP under a Coventry, Connecticut label. That does not move the street address into Connecticut. The state and street address remain the facts to use for local records; the processing label only describes a mail route. A Massachusetts ZIP code directory must preserve that distinction so a cross-state sort label is not mistaken for a state boundary.
Other western lines collect Springfield, Amherst, Pittsfield, Lenox, and nearby towns under processing labels based in Massachusetts. The range list is useful for spotting a broad postal group, but it cannot tell where one town ends or which municipal assessor holds an address. Confirm the town from the parcel or local office, then use the current USPS result for the mailing code.
Cape and Island ZIP Patterns
Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket have postal groupings that include villages, island service, and unique or PO-box use. The table includes groups labeled Chilmark, East Falmouth, Monument Beach, Centerville, Cotuit, Dennis, Marstons Mills, and West Yarmouth, as well as several Nantucket assignments. These names help describe where mail is processed; they do not define a whole island as a single municipality. Some listed ZIPs need an address-level check to confirm that they remain active and fit the address in hand.
Massachusetts also has seasonal postal identities and village names that may differ from a legal town name. When a past address appears under a village or post-office label, keep the original wording and note the town separately. This is especially useful for a deed, historical directory, or obituary that predates a current address format.
Finding Residents by ZIP Code
Massachusetts has no single public roll that lists every person in a ZIP. The MassGIS parcel data includes both ZIP and OWN_ZIP fields, but the statewide Property Information Finder is address-based and local search forms vary. A municipality's assessor may offer other fields; use its record card to confirm the parcel and town. The voter status page uses a residential ZIP only as part of one person's self-check, not as a public ZIP-wide search.
For one Massachusetts address, work in this order:
- Write down the town and full street address before choosing a ZIP value.
- Use MassGIS or the local assessor to locate the parcel; click the parcel result to view its fields and check ZIP separately from owner ZIP.
- For the voter's own status, enter the registered name, birth date, residential ZIP, and required acknowledgment. Ask the town election office about a permitted local list.
- Verify the complete address with USPS, then compare the postal city with the parcel municipality.
Massachusetts election offices maintain local lists with fields allowed by law; the statewide voter file is not public. A citywide status form cannot tell you who lives on a street. Once the ZIP narrows an address to its town and street, continue with the Massachusetts street directory's address-record process for parcel, deed, and street-level checks.
The Secretary of the Commonwealth's individual status form asks for these fields:
| Field or control | Type | Required | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| First and Last Name | Text | Yes | Enter the name used when registered. |
| Birth Month, Day, Year | Select fields | Yes | Personal date-of-birth check. |
| Residential ZIP | Text | Yes | Five digits for the address where the person is qualified to vote, not necessarily a mailing ZIP. |
| Acknowledgment | Checkbox | Yes | Confirm individual status use. |
| Search and Reset | Buttons | No | Run the check or clear the form. |
Because this form is an individual check, a Massachusetts ZIP code cannot be used here to list all voters in that area.
Massachusetts Parcel ZIP and Owner ZIP Differ
A parcel record may carry one ZIP for the land and another for the owner's tax mailing address. MassGIS uses ZIP for the site and OWN_ZIP for the owner address, alongside SITE_ADDR, OWN_ADDR, OWN_CITY, and OWN_STATE. The assessor's municipality is a separate local field. A town clerk or assessor can identify the record for the parcel; a ZIP alone cannot establish who lives there.
The Massachusetts Property Information Finder is address-oriented. Its statewide parcel table can show ZIP fields and standardized parcel data, while municipal forms differ in whether they search by owner name, address, or ZIP. MassGIS fiscal-year data varies with local delivery. If the owner ZIP points to another town or state, follow that mailing clue only to find a related record; check the property card and deed for the parcel facts. The distinction is useful when a Massachusetts resident lookup starts from a postal code instead of a street.
Massachusetts Voter ZIP Check Is Individual
The online status tool is meant for a voter to check their own registration. Its required five-digit code is tied to the qualifying residential address, and its acknowledgment confirms individual use. It is not the same as the local voter list. A municipal election office may provide a list with name, address, party, date of birth, active or inactive status, and voter ID, along with some registration and voting history. Phone, email, veteran status, permanent absentee status, confidential voter records, and minors' records may be withheld.
The statewide voter file is not a public record. It is available only to statewide campaigns and political parties under a license that bars sharing or selling it. A qualified candidate who does not have that access may ask towns in the district for a municipal file. For a Massachusetts ZIP code directory, that means a public reader should use the self-check only for the voter whose status is being checked, and contact the local election office for an allowed local list. Neither path produces a complete resident count.
Massachusetts Has No ZIP Population Table
No official statewide table was located that maps each ZIP to population or voter registration totals. Census ZIP Code Tabulation Areas are a different geography from USPS ZIP codes, and municipal election statistics follow town lines. Do not label a ZCTA estimate or town total as a postal ZIP count. A ZIP code directory can show processing groups and tell a reader how to check an address, but it cannot support a precise count of Massachusetts residents in each postal area from the available sources.
This gap matters when several Massachusetts towns share a post-office label or when a single municipality has several postal identities. A group in the USPS scheme table is not a population unit, and a unique ZIP may serve a campus or a box address rather than a residential community. For a reliable local question, ask the municipality for the specific record or statistic it holds and keep its geography named.
Massachusetts ZIPs Do Not Mark Town Lines
A USPS postal city can be a village or neighborhood, while a Massachusetts parcel's CITY and assessor municipality identify local government geography. Those fields do not always match. A ZIP may cross a municipal border, and a parcel may have a postal city that names a nearby place. Boston is a clear historical case: annexations changed which municipality an old address belonged to, from South Boston in 1804 and East Boston in 1836 through Hyde Park in 1912. A historical record can keep an older town name even when a later postal address uses Boston.
Keep the original ZIP and postal city on a source citation, then check the town against the assessor, clerk, registry district, or original record. Massachusetts addresses also use village names and local renumbering, so a postal label by itself cannot locate a deed or define a parcel. A ZIP can narrow the search area, but the local municipality decides which office holds a current property or voter record.
- ZIP and ZIP+4
- A five-digit ZIP names a postal area; the added four digits narrow delivery to a smaller segment or destination.
- PO-box ZIP
- A ZIP assigned for mail routed to post-office boxes; it does not by itself name a residential neighborhood.
- Unique ZIP
- A code used for one institution or organization, rather than a broad public delivery area.
- Carrier route
- A postal delivery route grouping within a ZIP area. It is not a town line or a list of residents.
